LAS CRUCES, NM - Hugh Allen Newman, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at a Las 
Cruces, NM nursing center. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. this evening at Getz Funeral 
Home. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Las Cruces, NM with 
Gerald Qualls officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery, directed by Getz 
Funeral Home.

Mr. Newman was born Nov. 16, 1913 in Altus, Ark., to Edward E. and Pearl Compton 
Newman. He married Kittie Carpenter Evans in July 1936. She preceded him in death. 
Mr. Newman was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was the owner and operator of 
Newman's Hardware from 1948 to 1985 and was a founder and former board member 
of Dona Ana Savings and Loan in Las Cruces.

Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn Kloppenburg of Las Cruces; a son, George A. 
Newman of Abilene; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
