CAVANAUGH, Dean Thomas-- Pan Am Captain born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa, January 17,
1915, only son of Iowa State Senator Emmett and Belle Cavanaugh, died peacefully
with his family at his side April 3, 2002 in Saratoga, California at the age of 87.
In his younger years he was an avid football player. He played on the 1933 state
championship team for Ft. Dodge. His father wanted him to follow his footsteps and
become a lawyer, but Dean's dreams were in the sky, and he was enthralled with the
new era of flight and the airplane.
After graduation from high school he attended junior college for one year and then
transferred to Parks Air College where he graduated with an Airframe and Mechanic
Certificate in 1936. He was hired by Western Air and moved to Salt Lake City, where
he met Barbara Ann Gubler a Registered Nurse from a pioneer Utah family.
Dean built up his flying hours by instructing student pilots. He was hired January 1941
by Pan American. He earned his ATR (Airline Transport Rating) and became a Captain
in short order because of WWII. He flew the Boeing 314 (The True China Clipper) as a
Captain. He finished his career based at San Francisco flying the Boeing 747. His
career spanned 34 years and included 13 different aircraft and over 37,000 hours of
flight time.
He flew military transport for Pan American Airlines during WWII and the Vietnam
War. He was an instructor as well as a line check pilot in San Francisco for several
years. He was the fifty-sixth pilot in the world to check out on the 747.
He was married for nearly sixty years to ""Barby"" who passed away February 10,
1999. They were sweethearts to the end. They had a wonderful adventure traveling
the globe. He was stationed in Long Island, New York, Miami, Florida, Los Angeles
and San Francisco as well as a six month assignment in Hong Kong in 1958.
Dean and Barbara are survived by their three children Dee Ann Cavanaugh of
