. JOSEPH5 BOYCE, (Joseph4-3-2-1), was probably born
in Salem and came with his father to Beekman ca. 1745
when still a young man.

He was noted in rent book 'A' concerning a farm that
had been rented to George Cooper, then Jonathan Ellis
with Samuel Brown, in lot 10. The farm was 100 acres
with rents of 12 bushels. The Cr. side reads: "He
[Ellis] is gon on the land without consent, no lease or
survey. May 1758 ____ ____ 106 acres all now mostly
extraordinary fit swamp for hay. Part of which he hath
sold to Jong Boyce without my consent and the other half
would sell to Jonathan French, which may consent to (but
not to Boyce)... " [ELP Box 129:A:60].

He evidently joined his father in counterfeiting and
was in and out of numerous jails in New England before
he was out of his twenties. He m. Thankful Bosworth at
Providence, RI 8 Sept. 1765, [HT 8854 16 Sept. 1963].
She may have been a dau. of Nathaniel and Elizabeth
(Lindsey) Bosworth who we noted above as probably
involved with the counterfeiting scheme in Dover.

Joseph Boyce Jr. was on the Beekman tax list from
1753 to 1754, Jr. off to 1758. He was quite a traveler
and the following tells a little more about him: "Before
September 7, according to the Boston Evening Post of
September 10 1744, Joseph Boyce and his associate, John
Scious, had been taken up and jailed in Boyce's home
town of Salem MA. They were, however, difficult to hold



for on the night of September 7 they broke out and
fled. Sheriff John Wolcott promptly offered a reward of
ten pounds, old tenor, for the capture of either one and
described them as follows: 'They are good looking strong
able bodied Men; Boyce wore his own Hair, which was
short and black, Syas wears a Wig or Cap. They were both
burnt in the Hand about two years ago, mark'd with the
letter T, being then convicted of Counterfeiting Bills
of Credit.'" [Ibid 67]. It was probably he who was in
the Dutchess Co. jail in May 1753. Samuel Sherman posted
a £100 bond for him.

Joseph Boyce died before 16 April 1792 when his widow
and administrator Thankful Boyce presented an account to
the Foster RI Town Council of funeral expenses and
support for his three youngest children up through 8
April of £51/16. His children changed the family name to
Dubois. [TAG v. 57:247].
