but per SSI there are two Vincent Blodgetts in NY born roughly the same time. Neither 
is exact fit. The one b 8 Dec 1912, d 31 Jan 1997 PennYan, Yates Co NY
the other b 17 Aug 1911, d 21 Jan 1999, Smithtown, Suffolk, Co, prob the one 
working at the Empire State Building

DAY BY DAY; A Fixture Retires

Three days before the Empire State Building's official opening on May 1, 1931, 
Vincent Blodgett began work there as an elevator operator. ''I wanted a steady job,'' 
he said. ''That was the Depression.'' 

After 10 years, he became a starter in the lobby near the plaque that says, ''You are 
now in the most famous building in the world.'' 

He rose to chief starter. Yesterday, at age 73, he retired. ''I just stayed and stayed 
and stayed,'' he said. ''I wouldn't retire now, except my hearing has gotten bad.'' 

Yes, he agreed, he had heard more than enough jokes about ''life being all ups and 
downs.'' He had greeted celebrities, he said, ''starting with Alfred E. Smith, the head 
of the building,'' had memorized the statistics people wanted to know (the building was 
1,472 feet high until renovation work began recently on its television mast, and the 
elevators speed at 1,000 feet a minute) and had met his wife, Marcella, there. She 
worked for the Office of Price Administration, which had a branch in the building, 
during World War II. They were married in 1945. 

They plan various short trips from their Flushing home. Horizontal ones, he said.
