COHOCTON, NY | Alton I. Wheaton, 90, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2007 at 
Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.

Alton was born on April 3, 1917 in Cohocton, NY, a sonn of Everett and Helen Fields 
Wheaton.

He was predeceased by his brothers Dudley, Raymond and Clifford Wheaton.
 
His family home was on Lent HIll in Cohocton, he graduated from N. Cohocton School 
in 1934. He has resided in Cohocton since 1946 and worked and retired from the 
Gunlocke Chair Company for 40 years retiring in 1976. Alton served in the Army Air 
Corps from 1942-1944 in San Antonio, TX, where he and Sara Cleveland were married 
on March 3, 1943. From 1983-2003, he and Sara spent the winter months in Aiken, 
SC. He enjoyed camping with family and enjoyed being outdoors, he particularly 
cherished his time in the woods on his land outside Cohocton. In his spare time, he 
designed and created many beautiful pieces for the Cohocton Methodist Church. Alton 
was a very devoted husband and father.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sara (Sally) Cleveland Wheaton of Cohocton; a 
son, Ronald (Karen) Wheaton; and granddaughters, Taylor and Malory, all of Elmira; 
sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth Cragg, Loren (Doris) Lewis, John E. Cleveland, 
Arlene Wheaton, and Ruby Cleveland; nieces and nephews, Elaine Burrit, Lorna 
Foster, Alan Lewis and John T. Cleveland; cousins, Richard (Teresa) Wheaton, 
Kenneth (Betty) Wheaton, Mick (Nancy) Moore, Bobby (Sandy) Wheaton, and Roy 
(Donna) Ulmer.

Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 
2007 at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home in Wayland, where funeral services 
will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at 1:00 p.m.

Contributions to Cohocton Fire Department or any Hospice facility in memory of Mr. 
Wheaton.
