LEAD: Dr. Broadus Mitchell, an educator, historian and biographer of Alexander 
Hamilton, died Thursday at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Tarrytown, N.Y. He was 95 
years old and lived in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and Wendell, Mass.

died Thursday at Phelps Memorial Hospital in Tarrytown, N.Y. He was 95 years old 
and lived in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and Wendell, Mass. 

Dr. Mitchell published works on the economic history of the South, including ''The 
Rise of Cotton Mills in the South'' (1921), ''William Gregg, Factory Master of the Old 
South'' (1928) and ''The Industrial Revolution in the South'' (1930), with his brother, 
George Sinclair Mitchell, as co-author. 

He wrote or co-authored four textbooks on economics, as well as ''American Economic 
History'' (1947) with his second wife, Louise Pearson, who died in 1986. 

In 1962, Dr. Mitchell completed publication of a two-volume biography, ''Alexander 
Hamilton.'' He later wrote four books on Hamilton's life and influence. In more recent 
years, Dr. Mitchell collaborated with his wife on ''A Biography of the Constituton of the 
United States'' (1964) and ''The Price of Independence'' (1976). 

Active in political affairs, he was former president of the Baltimore Urban League and 
chairman of the New Jersy Civil Liberties Committee. He was the Socialist candidate 
for governor of Maryland in 1934. Leader of Protest 

Dr. Mitchell taught economics at Johns Hopkins from 1919 to 1939; Occidental 
College, 1939 to 1941; New York University, 1942 to 1944, and Rutgers, 1949 to 
1958. He taught at the New College at Hofstra from 1958 to 1967. 

At Rutgers, he led a protest against the discharges of two faculty members for their 
political views during the McCarthy era. In 1938, he resigned from Johns Hopkins over 
the university's refusal to admit a black student to the graduate school. The student, 
Edward Lewis, was later head of the New York Urban League. 

Dr. Mitchell was born in Georgetown, Ky. He graduated from the University of South 
Carolina in 1913 and earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins in 1918. 

Surviving are two son, Sidney, of Fredricksburg, Va., and Christopher, of Irvington, 
N,Y.; a daughter, Theodora Dyer of Croton-on-Hudson; 10 grandchildren, and 2 
great-grandchildren. 

A service will be held May 27 at 3 P.M. at the Episcopal church of St. Luke in the 
Fields, at 487 Hudson Street.
