From 'The Oneonta Herald,' Oneonta, NY - February 17, 1916. This Weeks Mortality - 
'Death at Gilbertsville' - 'Mrs. Abel O. Barnes Passes Away Wednesday Morning.' Mrs. 
Abel O. Barnes passed away quietly at her home Wednesday, February 9. She had 
been in ill health for several days, but was thought to be improving until death came 
suddenly at the time stated. Mrs. Barnes was the second daughter of Benjamin 
Burgess and was born in this town July 10, 1845. She was married May 22, 1866, and 
she and Mr. Barnes went to his farm one mile east of Maple Grove, where they lived 
for 24 years, five children being born to them. In 1890 they moved to Maple Grove and 
Mr. Barnes bought the general store at that place. Eighteen years were spent there, 
one year at Otego and one year in their former home with there younger daughter. 
About six years ago they came to Gilbertsville, where Mr. Barnes has since been 
conducting the Marion Ave. grocery.
Mrs. Barnes will be mourned by a wide circle of friends who had learned to love her for 
her real worth. She was a devoted and loving wife and an efficient Christian mother. 
And one whose Christian influence has borne fruit in other lines than those of her 
immediate family.
She leaves to mourn her demise, besides her husband, one son and two daughters, 
W. Everett Barnes and Mrs. F.H. Sherwood of Gilbertsville, and Mrs. F.G. Hovey of 
Guilford, and six grandchildren, one brother and several nieces and nephews. The 
funeral will be held at her late home at 11 a.m. Friday, her pastor, Rev. Stephen 
Canliffe officiating.
