Charles F. Read died January 15 at his home in this city, 833 Thompson street. 
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10 A. M. from Finley’s chapel, conducted by 
Rev. Oswald W. Taylor, rector of Grace Memorial Episcopal church. The Masonic 
lodge will have charge of the committal service at Riverview cemetery. Mr. Read was 
born in Kalamazoo county, Michigan, December 15, 1862. He spent his early life in 
Michigan, engaged in the lumber business and banking. He came to Oregon in 1905 
with a party of Michigan lumbermen, who made a tour of the northwest lumber districts. 
They also spent some time visiting the Lewis and Clark exposition here. This trip 
caused Mr. and Mrs. Read to decide to locate here. The Michigan man entered the 
lumber and timber business here and became well known among the timber people of 
the state. He retired from active business in 1921. His wife, Mrs. Minnie Read, and 
their only daughter, Marjorie [sic] Read Murphy, died about 20 years ago. About ten 
years ago Mr. Read married Miss Cassie M. Chappell, who died September 4, 1929. 
Mr. Read was a member of Portland lodge, No. 55, A. F. and A. M., and the Scottish 
rite Masons. He is survived by a brother, Clayton Read, and two nieces of Kalamazoo, 
Mich., and a sister, Mrs. Fannie Cook of Albion, Mich.
