Commander Turner was killed, along with 295 crew aboard USS Mount Hood (AE-11), 
an ammunition ship which exploded in Seeadler Harbor, Manus, Admiralty Islands. Per 
strory in San Bernardino Sun, 6 Dec 1944, the explosion was an accident, and Turner 
was commander of the ship.
