1981 book:
Joshua was a carpenter. In 1871 he lived in Phila., Pa but in 1886 his brother Penrose
(1E859) states, in a letter to his cousin, that he does not know where his brother
Joshua is.
On Mar. 19, 1884, Joshua was disowned by the Western District of
Philadelphia Friends Meeting. He was living in Philadelphia, but not attending
meeting. Nothing else is known.

21 Mar 1885 Phila Inquirer has an article: "Watches Wanting Owners," subtitled
"Thefts Which the Detectives Believe Can be Traces to "Jeff." Brown" in which it
reports that two police officers had partly unraveled a crime wave by Jeff. Brown,
under arrest for robbing Joshua Maule, of 38th and Market, of a silver watch.
US Civil War Draft Reg Rec on ancestry lists him as age 28, plow maker, single, b in
Pa., living in Seventh Congresional District, consisting of Delaware and Chester
