VIRGINIA BEACH - Charles Clinton Caldwell died Aug. 3, 2009, in Seaside Health 
Center, Atlantic Shores, following an extended illness. A graduate of the University of 
Virginia, Charlie was an educator for 38 years, retiring as principal of Kempsville High 
School in 1991. For 15 years, Charlie taught and coached football at local high 
schools, including Norview, Deep Creek, Oscar Smith and Kellam.

In 1969, Charlie went into school administration, serving as assistant principal at First 
Colonial and later at Princess Anne High School. He then became principal of 
Kempsville Junior High School before serving 12 years as principal of Kempsville High 
School.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan Bishop Caldwell; by daughters, Amy 
Caldwell Ratliff, Virginia Caldwell Merritt and Dona Leigh Caldwell; by sons-in-law, 
James Gilmer Ratliff Jr. and William C. Merritt, all of Virginia Beach; and by 
grandchildren, James Gilmer Ratliff III, Charles Caldwell Ratliff and Virginia Joan 
Merritt.

Son of the late John G. Caldwell and Isabel Allen Caldwell, Charlie was born in 
Baltimore, during the Great Depression. He was reared in Raleigh, N.C., with his 
sister, the late Margaret Caldwell Connell, and his brother, the late John Hoos 
Caldwell.

Charlie attended grades 1-7 at Hayes Barton Elementary School and graduated in 
1949 from Needham Broughton High School, Raleigh, N.C.

The family will receive friends at the home of Bill and Ginny Merritt, 1369 Dunstan 
Lane, in Thoroughgood, Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. A celebration of Charlie's life 
will be held at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, at 11 a.m. 
Saturday, Aug. 8. Private entombment will be at Princess Anne Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to University of Virginia's Curry School of
