Former Lakecrest Drive resident Miles C. Doan died at Charlotte Hall Veterans  Home 
on August 14, 2013.
Mr. Doan and his wife Louraine moved to Greenbelt in 2000 and they enjoyed their 
time here.
Mr. Doan was born to T. Harvey Doane II and Marion Miles Doane on June 1, 1923 in 
Berwick, Pa. He was the youngest of five children.
Before enlisting in the army Mr. Doan left school and had not held a job at that  time. 
His mother falsified his work record and date of birth for him to enlist underage and 
signed him up. He trained at Fort Livingston in Louisiana not Indiantown Gap in 
Pennsylvania. During his army enlistment he served as a cook and a truck driver for 
the cleanup crew, both important jobs. He didn’t participate in the Omaha Beach D 
Day invasion or the Battle of the Bulge as he liked to claim. For his service he 
received a Purple Heart for an injury sustained in France, an
American Defense Service Medal and a European African Middle Eastern Service 
Medal (but no Bronze or Silver Stars). He received a commemorative French pin (but 
not the French Croix de Guerre) along with everyone else who attended a WWII 
reunion in Philadelphia. He enlisted as a private and was honorably ischarged
as a private.
After the war he worked at Weis grocery store in Berwick and then as a roofer in 
Pennsylvania, Kansas and Maryland. Later, he worked for the General Services 
Administration as a general carpenter in Washington, D.C., until his retirement. (He did 
not work for the State Department or the White House).
Mr. Doan was a member of the American Legion Post 19 in Washington, D.C., for 
several years before transferring membership to Post 136 in Greenbelt.
He frequented the Greenbelt Post regularly and enjoyed his time there.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Lorraine Palmatier Doan and a 
brother T. Harvey Doan, III.
He is survived by daughters Priscilla Mizani of Greenbelt and Tessa Ptak of Anderson, 
S.C.; sisters Janet Helwig of Millersburg, Pa. and Sara Van Houten of Tampa, Fla.; a 
brother Robert Doan of Sun City; Fla., two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
