Biography 
Both a graduate and later an employee of the Normal School and Teachers College 
Class of 1874 
Registrar and Secretary of the Faculty from 1905 - 1923 
Went with the faculty on the trip to Europe in 1909 
After graduation, taught at Lexington in the Santa Cruz Mountains. She married in 
1877, had one child and returned to teaching after her husband died in 1889. She 
taught at Reed Street School (now Lowell Elementary on 7th Street in San Jose).  
Member of the San Jose Poetry Society, League of American Penwomen and the 
Manzanita Club. 
Born April 1855; died 1954

Published books of her poetry and at least two other books: 
The Story of An Inspiring Past (1928) - history of the State Normal School and San 
José State Teachers College form 1862 to 1928

Also had some of her poems appear in publications of the school such as the Normal

William Sands Greathead Sarah kept house.6 Her husband William died on 25 
February 1889 aged 38.1,7,8 In the census of 1 June 1900 in Santa Clara, California, 
USA, she was listed as the daughter of Sarah L Hammond Estelle was a 
stenographer.9 In the census of 20 April 1910 in San Jose, Santa Clara, California, 
USA, she was listed as the daughter of an unknown person Sarah worked as a normal 
school Registrar.10 Sarah was listed as the head of the household of on the census of 
5 January 1920 in San Jose, Santa Clara, California, USA, she was the state roster.11 
In the census of 2 April 1930 in Pearl Avenue, San Jose, California, USA, she was 
listed as the mother of Arthur William Greathead.12 She died on 8 May 1954 in Santa
