"The body of Chief Machinist's Mate W. E. Coughennower, 28, attached to Great 
Lakes Naval training station, was found floating in Rock river last night at the rear of 
the 400 block on South Wyman street. The petty officer had been reported AWOL 
since Monday."
No foul play, been in water four or five days.
In Navy 10 years, served aboard the Enterprise, the Kitkun Bay, and the Atlanta. 
Stationed for a time at Atka, Alaska.
At age of 10, moved with parents to Churdan, graduated 1937. Enlisted in Navy Jan. 
1938. Spent his last year in China, transferred to Chicago May 1948 for special 
schooling.
