LEONARD H. FLETCHER, LEADER IN INSURANCE
Leonard H. Fletcher was president and owner of Fletcher Insurance Agency in
Lakewood.
Mr. Fletcher, 65, died of a heart attack Sunday at Cleveland Clinic Hospital.
His father, Leonard H. Fletcher Sr., started the agency, which the younger man took
over while still in college. The son, whose firm is associated with Insurance Affiliates
Agency Inc., was recognized as a leader in the life and property-casualty field, said
Larry Brenner, a vice president with the agency.
Brenner said Mr. Fletcher held Charter Life Underwriter and Charter Property Casualty
Underwriter certifications, and that it is rare for insurance professionals to hold both.
Brenner said while Mr. Fletcher was driven, it never led to a stressful office
environment.
"He was always smiling and joking around," Brenner said.
He said Mr. Fletcher would frequently bring his grandchildren to the office. "He was a
wonderful family man," Brenner said. "He cared so much about his family and other
people."
Mr. Fletcher received a bachelor's degree from Western Reserve University, and an
insurance degree from Purdue University. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and
Phi Beta Kappa fraternities. He would later found the Leonard and Louise Fletcher
Foundation that gives scholarships to college students.
A sports enthusiast, Mr. Fletcher was elected president of the Cleveland Athletic Club
in 1975 and was made an honorary life member in 1986. He was a founding member of
the Jimmie Lee Foundation, a nonprofit charitable corporation devoted to the
promotion of amateur athletics.
Mr. Fletcher was active in the Lakewood YMCA, where he coached the swim team
when his four daughters were young.
"He used to joke that he wanted to coach, because with four daughters he already
had his own team," Brenner said.
A competitive swimmer himself, Mr. Fletcher was captain of the swim team and a
member of the state championship relay team while a student at Lakewood High
School.
He enjoyed handball and bowling. At the Cleveland Athletic Club, he was singles
champion three times and doubles champion 17 times over four decades.
Mr. Fletcher, who had a home in Arizona, was a member of the Troon Golf and Country
Club of Scottsdale. He was a 32nd-degree Mason with Rocky River Lodge 703 and
was affiliated with the Royal Order of Jesters, Al Koran Shrine and Scottish Rite.
He was a member of the North Scottsdale United Methodist Church, where he served
on the financial and membership committees. Mr. Fletcher also belonged to Lakewood
United Methodist Church, where he once was a trustee.
