Betty E. Hartke, 77, of Neoga passed away at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, at 
Heartland Christian Village, Neoga.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary of The Assumption 
Church, Neoga, with the Rev. Robert DeGrand of Sigel and the Rev. Pat Thies of 
Effingham officiating. Burial will be in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 
held from 9 a.m. until time of service Friday at Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home, Neoga.

Betty was born Dec. 7, 1932, in Neoga, the daughter of Mark ‘Mike’ and Pauline 
(Phelps) Cordes. On Feb. 3, 1951, she married James L. Parker. He passed away Jan. 
13, 1954. Then, on April 27, 1957, Betty wed James B. Hartke, and he passed away 
on Dec. 11, 1996. 

Betty was a member of St. Mary of The Assumption Church, Neoga, and was a former 
employee of General Electric, Mattoon, and Kern Manufacturing, Neoga.

Affectionately known as WaWa by family and friends, Betty had diverse interests, 
including food/cooking (famous for her cherry delight), music/pop culture (she even 
attended a Kid Rock concert with her grandson J. J.) and spending time loving and 
nurturing her family and friends. She has shaped the lives of the many who knew and 
loved her, and her love and laughter will be forever in our hearts.

Mrs. Hartke leaves two daughters, Judy Hatfield of Bedford, Ind., and Francie Roy 
and husband, Jimmie, of Normal; one brother, Donald Cordes and wife, Mary, of 
Neoga; one sister, Evelyn Habing and husband, Delbert, of Altamont; seven 
grandchildren, Angie Allen and husband, Marcus, of Pomona, Mo., Andy Krikie of 
Springfield, Mark Krikie of Neoga, Paul Hatfield and wife, Jessica, of Mitchell, Ind., J. 
J. Roy of Normal, Timmy Hatfield of Bedford, Ind., and Brianna Roy of Normal; and 
three great-grandchildren, Wyatt Krikie of Neoga, Sean Allen of Pamona, Mo., and 
Xavier Hatfield of Mitchell, Ind.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; one sister, Thelma Russell; and one 
daughter, Pam Krikie.
