Joseph W. Ferrebee, M.D., whose pioneering research on bone marrow transplantation 
led to the first human transplant, died on Nov.14,2001,at age 93 in Rancho Santa 
Fe,Calif.He was born on Dec.23,1908,in Salt Lake City and had been married to 
Juanita Sault (Salty) Ferrebee,for 65 years. Dr. Ferrebee graduated from
Harvard Medical School in 1934 with honors and did his medical residency at the 
College of Physicians and Surgeons. During several years as a research physician
and hematologist at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, he began important studies of 
tissue immunology. In 1948, he was invited to relocate to Bassett Hospital, and seven 
years later he was instrumental in recruiting Dr. E. Donnall Thomas
from the Brigham. Dr. Ferrebee’s continued crucial role with Bassett’s transplant-
research team enabled the world’s first human bone marrow transplant to be performed 
at Bassett and ultimately to Dr.Thomas receiving the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Dr. 
Ferrebee was the author of 124 scientific papers, including one written in 1957 with 
Dr. John P. Merrill, which was one of the first
to suggest a way to transplant organs successfully in humans. In 1971, the secretary 
of the Experimental Hematological Society wrote,“You and a handful
of others ...must be heard, but you, above all others, are the history of bone marrow 
transplantation.” Upon learning of his death,Dr. Thomas said,“Joe was one of the 
finest thinkers I’ve ever known.He was a very stimulating individual.…
He was a major force in my life and I’m sure in the lives of many others. He was a 
pioneer in transplantation; he had many innovative ideas, and not just in 
transplantation.” Gifts in his memory may be made to Bassett Healthcare.A
memorial service for friends and family will be held in Cooperstown this summer. [file
