obit: Salem Evening News, Jan. 20, 1919. Another Veteran of the Civil War Answers 
"Taps". John S. Gray, a veteran of the Civil War, died at 7 West Ave., yesterday, 
after a long illness. He was born in Salem, April 2, 1834, and was essentially one of 
the down town boys. He was a cooper by trade and worked for years for the late 
Benjamin W. Getchell. He was the last of a family of 10 children. He served his 
country in the Civil War as a member of Co. M. Third Mass. Heavy Artillery along with 
his brother. He was unmarried.
