1888 Lawrence worked as a money order clerk in a post office... 1889 worked as a 
clerk at Phillips & Nash... 1890 as a runner at Merchants and Farmers' Bank.

email from Shirley: Alice Hanes (Portsmouth Naval Shipyard  Museum Curator) said Mr 
McKay Jack used to pat her head when as a child she visited the Merchants & 
Farmers Bank.  She indicated he was Chairman of the Board for that bank and that it 
was the only bank that didn't close during the great depression.
