Mary Alice Manny, 73, a community volunteer, was closely involved for many years 
with the University of Chicago adult education program, "Know Your Chicago," and 
had served as its president. 

 A resident of the Near North Side, Mrs. Manny died Saturday in her home. 

 The "Know Your Chicago" program conducts tours and programs to help the spouses 
of executives in the city get to know it better. The tours take groups to the stock 
exchange, businesses and museums to familiarize them with Chicago and its 
resources. Mrs. Manny was active with the program for more than 20 years. She was 
also a volunteer in the 1960s at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago 

 Mrs. Manny was a graduate of Radcliffe College and, following World War II, was a 
charter member of the violin section of the Michigan City Symphony. 

 "She had a knack with people," her son, Carter III, said. "My mother was a very warm 
person who made friends easily. She could sit down with anyone and hold a 
conversation with ease." 

 Survivors, besides her son, include her husband, Carter H. Jr.; a daughter, Elizabeth; 
and a sister. 

 Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Blair Chapel of the Fourth 
Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut St

Mary Alice Manny, 73, a Near North Side resident who was active in a number of civic 
organizations, died Saturday in her home. 

 Among the many groups she supported was the adult education division of the Know 
Your Chicago program. Sponsored by the University of Chicago, the organization 
conducts tours of city landmarks. 

 Mrs. Manny not only coordinated many trips but also served as Know Your Chicago's 
president during her affiliation with it, dating back to the 1970s. For several years in 
the 1960s, she was a volunteer at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. 

 A native of White Plains, Mo., she was a 1941 graduate of Radcliffe College in 
Cambridge, Mass. It was there she met her future husband, Carter H. Manny Jr., who 
was attending nearby Harvard University. 

 Mr. Manny is a retired architect who played a significant role in the design of O'Hare 
Airport and First National Bank building. The couple maintained a second home in 
Indiana, where Mrs. Manny was a charter member of the violin section of the Michigan 
City Symphony. 

 Also surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth; a son, Carter III, and a sister, Jeanette 
Grisham. 

 Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Blair Chapel, Fourth Presbyterian Church, 
126 E. Chestnut. Burial services in Michigan City, Ind., will be private.
