Charles Oliver Brown fought in the Union Army from 1861 to June 21, 1865.He was a 
member of "C" Company of the 3rd Ohio Cavalry and was stationed in Macon, GA at 
the time of his discharge.He was only 13 years when he enlisted with the unit which 
his father helped form.Charles O. Brown was a bugler when he volunteered and a 
corporal before the end of the war.One of the youngest Union soldiers in the Union 
army.Charles saw action in 25 battles and was wounded in action, earning the 
nickname "The Boy Bugler" of Sherman's Army.At 16 he was made chief of the 
regiments 26 buglers, the youngest in the Union Army.
He blew the cavalry charge that sent 3000 men into battle at Lovejoy Station during 
Sherman's sweep on Atlanta.At the battle of Selma he carried a message thru the 
thick of fire.For his bravery, Congress later voted him a pension increase.He was a 
member of the historic expedition that captured Confederate president, Jefferson 
Davis
Charles O. Brown enrolled in Olivet College 1871.In his Junior yr, he was instructor in 
penmanship & bookkeeping,In his Senior yr he was an instructor in Greek & teacher of 
penmanship & bookkeeping.He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree June 1875.
At the time of General Sherman's speech at Michigan Military Academy, Dr. Brown was 
pastor of the Congregrational church of Rochester, MI.From 1880-1885 he served at 
the Congregational Church of Galesburg, MI, taught at Olivet College, Olivet. MI and 
served as pastor of the First Congregational Church of Kalamazoo, MI.
A lifelong Republican, Dr. Brown was very nearly elected U.S. senator from Iowa 
during his stay in Dubuque.At that time the state legislature elected senators.Friends 
asked him to run."I have a job now for which some people think I am well fitted," he 
answered, and made no effort to be elected.Despite his indifference, he was 
nominated & lost the election by only 3 votes.Dr. Brown moved to Tacoma, WA to 
pastor a church.While there, he received a call to pastor the largest Congregational 
church on the Pacific coast in San Francisco.He accepted that position.Meanwhile, 
his friends in Tacoma, had been preparing for his nomination by the Republican state 
convention as a candidate for governor of the state of Washington.Although informed 
that his nomination & election were virtually assured, he refused to withdraw his 
resignation from the Tacoma church & moved to San Francisco.So Dr. Brown can be 
linked to General Sherman by another of the generals famous quotes:"If nominated, I 
will not run.If elected, I will not serve."
At one time, He was vice president of LaSalle Extension University, Chicago, which he 
helped organize.He authored two books: "Evidences of Christianity" & "Labor and Its 
Troubles". He & his wife attended the 75th Gettysburg anniversary where President 
Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Peace Memorial.In 1940, one year before his 
death, Dr. Brown was one of a squad of Civil War veterans invited to the Chicago 
showing of the movie "Gone with the Wind".Very few Civil War veterans fought in the 
war & saw the movie.
