Hudson, SD: B Sidney rown, 95, of Hudson, South Dakota, died Tuesday, May 19, 
2015 at Bethesda of Beresford Nursing Home in Beresford, South Dakota. Memorial 
service will be held Sunday, May 24, at 2:00 p.m. at Hudson Lutheran Church with 
Pastor Lori Marty officiating. Burial will be held prior at 1:00 p.m. at Eden Cemetery in 
Hudson and is open to all who knew him. 

Sidney Glenn Brown, son of Oliver Frederick and Cora Mae (Boardman) Brown, was 
born along with his twin brother Wallace Boyd on July 28, 1919 at the family farm west 
of Oldham, South Dakota. He graduated from Oldham High School, class of 1938. He 
went on to receive his teaching certificate with his first teaching position being at 
Drakola Country School, a one room schoolhouse. Sidney was sworn into the Army Air 
Corp on January 16, 1942 and began his training in Mississippi. Sidney was united in 
marriage with the love of his life, Ann Marie Larson on June 14, 1943 in Biloxi, 
Mississippi. He began his pilot training at Kessler Air Force Base just four days later. 
Sidney continued his training & proudly served his country during World War II where 
he flew a variety of aircraft including the P-47 Thunderbolt and was a pilot instructor. 
These years of adventure provided countless stories that he loved to share with family 
and friends even until the last days of his life. 

After the war, Sidney and Ann made their home in Hudson, South Dakota. They were 
blessed with the arrival of their pride and joy, their son, Darwin Glenn on October 3, 
1948. Throughout Sidney’s adult life, he worked a variety of positions including 
teacher and coach for the Hudson School District, car salesman at Harry Miller 
Garage, worked for his brother-in-law at Foxbilt Feed Store, was church custodian at 
Hudson Lutheran, apartment manager for the Hudson Housing Corporation and a sales 
associate for Schoeneman’s. However, he spent the majority of his career as a rural 
mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 33 years of service in 
May 1979.

Sidney had many interests including crocheting, vegetable and flower gardening, 
canning, cooking and baking, stamp collecting, enjoying sporting events and 
participating in golf and bowling leagues. He could often be found at the nearest 
airport watching aircraft take off and land. Sidney’s favorite activity though was 
spending time with his son, granddaughters, their spouses and his great-grandchildren. 
Some of their favorite memories include side yard games of badminton and croquet, 
learning to drive at a very young age on the back roads around Hudson, bicycle rides 
to the drug store downtown, regular games of Pittsburgh and GOB (Sidney’s 
concoction of vanilla ice cream, Hershey’s chocolate syrup and crushed saltine 
crackers …so good!). Sidney was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Hudson 
Lutheran Church. He reflected on his life daily by keeping a diary for nearly 60 years. 

Sidney is survived by his son, Darwin (Jeanette) Brown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 
six grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Axtman of Sioux Falls; Heidi (Mark) Terveen of 
Sioux Falls; Kari (Josh) Boyd of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Ashley (Tom) Frost of Sioux 
Falls; Bryce (Danielle) Bettmann of Omaha, Nebraska; and Jordan Bettmann of 
Minneapolis, Minnesota; 14 great-grandchildren, Isaac, Gabriell, Nicolas and Jacob 
Axtman; Emma, Katelyn, Andrew and Ava Terveen; Sophia and Jonah Boyd; Gable 
and Autumn Frost; Lyla and Annabelle Bettmann, as well as numerous nieces and 
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; parents, Fred and Cora; sisters, Bernice 
(Lester) Larson; Viola (Paul) Apland; Marjorie (Lloyd) Youel; Ruby (Elwood) Page; twin 
brother, Wallace (Betty) Brown; and brother, Merlyn Brown; inlaws, Theodore and 
Hilma Larson; brothers-in-law Oscar (Ruby) Larson, Palmer (Zepha) Larson, Clarence 
(Luella) Larson; sister-in-law Mabel (Darwin “Doc”) Bowyer, as well as many nieces and 
nephews.
