Gerald B. Deane, affectionately known as Grandpa, age 80, of Toledo, Iowa, formerly 
of Chicago and White Shield, passed away at home surrounded by family members on 
Oct. 21, 2011. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Ralph Wells 
Memorial Complex, White Shield. Burial will be at Old Scout Cemetery, White Shield. 

 Wake services will be held at 5 p.m. today at the complex. 

 Gerald was born in Elbowoods on Dec. 10, 1930. He was the son of William Jr. and 
Leona (Yellowbird) Deane. In his youth, he met and made lifetime friends and relatives 
with John Danks, Emerson Packineau, Eugene White and Matt Mason. He proudly 
served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to 
Elizabeth (Jones) Deane on Nov. 28, 1954. 

 Gerald moved his family to Chicago, where they raised eight children. He was a great 
provider and protector for his family. He worked for Commonwealth Edison for over 35 
years and retired to Toledo, Iowa. He was a longtime parishioner of Saint Mary of the 
Lake Church in Chicago. During his free time, he enjoyed reading and watching 
westerns. He enjoyed playing cards and playing the casinos. 

 Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth M. Deane; his parents, William 
Jr. and Leona Deane; three brothers, Kenneth, Victor and Joseph Deane; and one 
sister, Marie (Deane) Wells. 

 He is survived by his three daughters, Veronica and Deborah Deane, Chicago, and 
Mary Deane, Layton, Utah; five sons, David (Maryann), Jay, Michael (Patricia) and 
Edward (Ruth) Deane, all of Chicago, and Les (Kay) Deane, Toledo, Iowa; his three 
sisters, Marcella (Eugene) White, Delores Wilkinson and Catherine Realbird; 22 
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is the proud uncle of many nieces and 
nephews. 

 The immediate family would like to specially recognize Les and Kay Deane for the 
caretaking of Gerald during his last years. 

 Any funeral donations may be sent to Thompson Funeral Home of Garrison.
