Former Detroit Lakes resident Scarlett M. Horning, 64, died March 1, 2006, at her 
home in Naples, Fla. 


 


Scarlett Melanie Enyart, the daughter of Sylvia (Gramm) and Kenneth "Rudy" Enyart, 
was born Feb. 22, 1942, in Hazen, N.D. She attended elementary and high school in 
Stanton, N.D., and spent her early years living in or near Stanton, in various locations, 
and on the family farm just south of Stanton. 

Scarlett graduated from Minot State Teachers College in 1965, with a degree in 
special education for the deaf. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, 
participated in the very first co-ed gymnastics team at MSTC, and was a candidate for 
Miss North Dakota in 1963.


She began her professional career at the School for the Deaf in Devils Lake, N.D. 
Scarlett continually advanced her studies in speech therapy, attending several of the 
most qualified institutions in the U.S.

On June 1, 1966, she married her high school sweetheart, Gerald "Jerry" Horning. 
Together they moved to Faribault, Minn., where she continued to teach children with 
hearing impairments, mental and physical disabilities. 

When Scarlett and Jerry moved to Bloomington, Minn., Scarlett attained her master's 
degree in audiology at Minnesota State University, and continued her work with 
children with disabilities. She and a colleague created an instructional video that 
helped spread the education and development of an alternative to sign language, 
called "cued speech." The video sold more than 5,000 copies worldwide. They also 
co-authored a textbook on the same topic that is still used nationally in the teaching 
of the deaf. She was rated one of three outstanding teachers of the deaf in the state 
of Minnesota and was invited to be a keynote speaker at teachers' conferences 
throughout the U.S.


In 1971, Scarlett and Jerry moved to Detroit Lakes, and stayed there for 20 years. 
Their boys attended and graduated from high school there, while Scarlett was 
employed with Lake Agassiz Special Education Cooperative, then at White Earth 
Elementary School, and as a consultant for the deaf and hearing impaired through the 
Education Cooperative Service Unit, Fergus Falls. In later years, Scarlett taught in 
Harlingen, Texas, and Lisbon, N.D.

Scarlett and Jerry had many good friends wherever they lived and were famous for 
hosting wonderful parties. The loves of her life were her two sons, Tyler and Russell, 
and later, her four grandchildren. They were the source of great humor and fun to her 
and memories of their family trips were precious to her.


Scarlett was also an accomplished, self-taught artist. She was especially good in oil 
portraits and still life. She did not have a knack for music, however, although she had 
a burning desire and practiced all her life to play the violin and piano. 

Scarlett was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in 1994, and following major 
surgery, was expected to live only a few months. With not much more than her 
overwhelming positive attitude and faith in God, she enjoyed 12 more years with her 
family and friends.

Scarlett is survived by her husband, Jerry; their sons Tyler (Cindi) Horning of Omaha, 
Neb., and Russell (Jennifer) Horning of Centennial, Colo.; four sisters, Carrie 
Simpfenderfer of Stanton, N.D., Grace (Byron) Fretty of Big Lake, Minn., Jessie Quinn 
of Bismarck, N.D., and Sally Jane (Charles) Sorenson of Riverdale, N.D.; two brothers, 
Warren Enyart of Cooperstown, N.D., and Winston (Linda) Enyart of Bismarck; four 
grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty (Benny) Sailer of Pick City, N.D.; as well as many 
loving cousins, nieces and nephews; dozens of life-long friends; and hundreds of 
former students.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Wakely Enyart; a brother-in-
law, Leon Simpfenderfer; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Art and Ida Horning, 
Stanton.

Her remains were brought home and a memorial service held on Saturday, March 18, 
at the Stanton Civic Center in Stanton, N.D.

Memorials may be sent to Carrie Simpfenderfer in Stanton and will be donated to two 
churches where Scarlett worshiped.
