BARNES, DONA RUTH
Kalamazoo
Dona Ruth Barnes passed away on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at the age of 85.
She was born on March 11, 1928 in Decatur, IL, the daughter of Donald and Ruth Ann
(Quayle) Weidman and moved to Kalamazoo as a young girl. Dona graduated from
Kalamazoo Central High School in 1946 and from Kalamazoo College in 1950 with a
major in biology. Dona enjoyed traveling, taking art classes and reading the classics,
such as "Anne of Green Gables" and "Black Beauty". She was an active member of
her church, First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo. She was actively involved in
her bridge club, volunteer work, Bible Study and enjoyed luncheons with her friends.
She also had a heart for gardening, tending gardens at her homes in Kalamazoo and
Gull Lake and for many years, at her church. Dona had a wonderful affection for
horses. While she never had her own horse, she loved to ride them and collected
glass figurines of horses. Her love of horses was passed on to her daughter, Nancy
and her great-grand daughter, Logan. She was a talented seamstress, home maker
and cook. Dona was a private person with a sense of humor and wit. Although she
might not have always shared her thoughts or feelings easily, she was always sincere.
On September 12, 1948, she married Charles W. Barnes, who survives, and together
they celebrated their 65th Anniversary this year. Dona is also survived by their
daughters, Lynn (Tom) Belco of Plainwell and Nancy (Thomas Frank) De Koning of
Kalamazoo; grandchildren, T.C., Andrew and Kelly Belco, Monica (Greg) Koning; great
grandchildren, Paige, Kayla, Logan and Lucas Koning; sister-in-law, Judy (Dave) Van
Hove. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the Amber Way and
the Upjohn Nursing Home staffs for their loving care given to Dona during her stay.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 11, 2013 at 1:00 PM in the First
United Methodist Church, 212 S. Park St. with Rev. Dr. Douglas Vernon, officiating.
Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday,
from 4:00 - 6:00 PM in the Parlor of the First United Methodist Church. In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association or the First United
Methodist Church. Please visit www.langelands.com for online obituary, directions and
register book to leave condolences. (269) 343-1508.
