Lakeview Resdient "Redefines Retirement"
Honey Brook, PA - It is easy to discover how residents of the Tel Hai Retirement
Community redefine retirement - You just have to catch up with them first! September
29 marked the ninety-ninth birthday of Tacie Gatchel, a Tel Hai Retirement Community
member residing in Lakeview Assisted Living since November 1993. Born in
Parkesburg in 1907, Tacie was was only eighteen months old when her young father
died at the age of 27. Her mother and three-month old sister returned to Coatesville to
live with Tacie's maternal grandparents while she moved in with her paternal
grandmother in West Grove. There she attended school until age 13; returning to live
in her mother's Coatesville home at that time. Tacie and her sister remained close
throughout their lives and both have been Lakeview residents.
A 99th birthday calls for a special celebration but it was especially delightful to mark
the day for such an active and engaging individual. Married in her late twenties, Tacie
and her husband did not have children of their own but counted all their nieces,
nephews and their friends’ children as their “kids.” These were the folks that surprised
Tacie with a wonderful birthday bash. Her neighbors in the Lakeview community also
celebrated her special day with balloons and cake. Tacie may not stand over five feet
tall but she is a giant among residents who cheerfully serve one another on the Tel
Hai campus. Her morning begins with breakfast but she is soon off to attend to “Jack
& Jill” the community finches. She visits them three times each day to be sure they
have sufficient food and water and handles daily cage cleaning responsibilities
joyfully. Later in the day she will stop by to serve as a “Friendly Visitor” for persons in
The Meadows Health Care Center. “Anything to make life better for others” seems to
be her mantra.
This energetic 99 year old insists on doing her own housekeeping and laundry and is
eager to assist others who may be less able. She assumes responsibility for the plants
on the second floor of her building and is a terrific fan of BINGO! Tacie enjoys all
activities as she enjoys life—with a smile and great kindness. Never one to sit around
you may find her on a shopping trip to Yoder’s or Shady Maple or enjoying the visiting
Therapy Dogs on campus. Always a lover of animals—especially dogs and birds—her
dwelling is full of photos of furry and feathered friends and her bed is the resting place
for a collection of plush animals she treasures. Tacie makes reaching 99 look easy,
engaging and great fun. We should all be so blessed!
