Savington Warren Crampton of Englewood [Florida], retired after a long career in the 
newspaper and advertising fields and longtime resident of this area, died Friday, July 
31, 1998. He was 96.
Mr. Crampton was born in Baltimore, MD., and came to Manasota Key in 1967 from 
Kitty Hawk, N.C. He was a 1923 graduate of Harvard University and began his 
newspaper career as a reporter for the New York Herald. After a short time as 
reporter, he was elevated to the drama desk as assistant to the drama editor, 
Alexander Wollcott. Subsequently, as the Herald was sold to the New York Tribune, 
he did a stint as the assistant foreign editor on Fox Movietone News, then as a wire 
editor in New York for the Associated Press. In 1925, he went to Paris, France as a 
foreign correspondent in the Paris Bureau of the Associated Press, returning to New 
York in 1930 as night foreign editor of the AP.
He left the newspaper field in 1931 to join the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency 
and in 1935 entered the radio side, working for several years on the Lux Radio 
Theater. In 1937, he became Radio Director of William Katy & Co. and produced 
Benny Goodman's first radio program in Hollywood and subsequently The Camel 
Caravan with Jack Oakie. Returning to New York, he later joined the Hutchins 
advertising agency for Philco and began work on the new post-war Bing Crosby radio 
program.
He also supervised Philco's part of the Don McNeill Breakfast Club morning show. In 
1946, he started in television with the Philco Sunday Night Theater which ran for 10 
years on NBC. He left New York to retire to his farm in Bucks County, Pa. and after 
several years in Kitty Hawk.
He leaves three sons, Dr. Richard Crampton of Charlottesville, Va., Lewis Crampton of 
Hinsdale, Ill. ], and Henry Crampton of Sarasota; a daughter, Patty de Losa of New 
York; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
