A remembrance service for John B. Stokes Jr., 91, of Dover, will be held at 4 p.m. 
Friday, Oct. 1 in the Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 S. State St. Mr. Stokes died 
Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mr. Stokes was born April 24, 1913, in Moorestown, N.J., to the late J. Bispham and 
Elizabeth Clarke Stokes.

A U.S.Army veteran of World War II,he commanded a tank destroyer unit in the Asiatic 
Pacific Theater,earning many commendations,including a Bronze Star Medal.He 
continued in service in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring in 1959 with the rank of 
lieutenant colonel.

Mr. Stokes earned a Bachelor of Economics degree from the University of Virginia. He 
was a National Distinguished Eagle Scout and recipient of the BSA Silver Beaver 
Award.

He worked as a life insurance agent for Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. for 44 years. 
Mr. Stokes was a Rotarian, serving in Moorestown, N.J., and Zellwood, Fla. He was 
also a member of the Presbyterian Church of Dover. He volunteered over 2,500 hours 
with Hospice and served on the Board of Directors.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joy Dumas Stokes, of Dover; three sons, Dr. 
John B. Stokes III of Iowa City, Iowa, David D. Stokes of Woodbridge, Va., and J. 
Clarke Stokes of Kansas City, Kan.; two daughters, Susan Hajec of Camden and Kathy 
Lyall of Fredericksburg, Va.; one foster son, Frank Campbell Esq. of Boston; thirteen 
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

DOVER - John B. Stokes Jr. of Dover died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in Bayhealth-
Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 91.

Mr. Stokes was born April 24, 1913, in Moorestown, N.J., son of the late J. Bispham
