Deceased Name: Richard (Dick) Dean Nelson
Our beloved Richard Dean Nelson, age 79, passed away March 16, 2002 at his home
in Salt Lake City with his wife at his side.
Dick was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 7, 1922 to Marva and Loren
Nelson. On February 6, 1947, he married the love of his life,
Fae R. Rumel. He graduated from Utah State University in June of 1949 with a degree
in Botany and Zoology and continued his education with a degree in Elementary
Education. Dick was a teacher for the Salt Lake City School District for 36 years
retiring in 1985.
He served in the U.S. Army during the World War II European Campaign and
completed his 20 year military career with the Army Reserve and the National Guard.
Dick was an avid fisherman and reader. He became an ardent historian of World War
II. He was a wonderful story teller and loved to talk to and meet people. His smile and
laughter would fill a room with joy! He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Fae; his
daughters, Patty (Daniel) Reynolds, Kathy (Joseph) Sanders, Caroline (Ty)
Stubblefield, and Jennifer (Michael) Popich. Dick had 12 grandchildren, Joey, Joshua,
Emily, Amie, Jamie, Nephi, Sean, Lindsey, Austin, Clay, Emily, and A.J. Preceded in
death by his grandson, Richard.
Dick was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. We will miss his Love, strength
and wonderful humor.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 21st at 10:30 a.m. at St
Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East. A Holy Rosary will be recited On
Wednesday, March 20th at 7:00 p.m. at Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary Chapel.
Friends and Family may call between 6-7 p.m. prior. Interment will be at Mount Calvary
Catholic Cemetery, Fourth Avenue and "T" Street.
