John Robert Thomas, known as Bob and as Robe to his family and many friends, died
in Salt Lake City, June 6th, 2002 of heart failure after some months of failing health.
He was born at home in Salt Lake, March 20, 1923, to Olive and King Thomas. He
was a third generation Salt Laker, grandson of Utah pioneers. He attended Stewart
School, East High School, and the University of Utah, where he was a member of the
Sigma Chi fraternity, graduating in Business in 1947.
Bob married Marjorie Lou Jarvis in December 1947. Their marriage of 49 years was
filled with love, happiness and giving. His tender care of Marjorie in her long, final
illness was a lesson in love for his family.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a fighter pilot during World War II. Bob co-founded the
accounting firm of Birrell, Zimmerman & Thomas in 1950. The firm merged with Touche,
Ross and Co. in 1966. In 1976 Jack Sweet asked Bob to join Sweet Candy Company
as financial vice president where he worked the next 26 years, retiring in May of this
year as Chairman of the Board.
An avid skier and golfer, he loved the Utah mountains and Arizona Sonoran desert. He
served his community by supporting social services and the arts on many committees
and boards. He was a lifelong Democrat committed to fairness and opportunity for
others.
Bob is survived by his wife of three years, Ann Adams Jarcho Thomas, his brother
Richard Thomas, and his sister, Marjorie Thomas Lund, his children and their spouses
- daughter Leslie, son John, his wife Jennifer, son Winston, his wife Deanne and five
grandchildren, Robin, Samuel, Wesley, Austin, and Georgia, who take his intelligence,
courage, and large spirit into the future.
Bob's gratitude for life and the gifts he was given was expressed daily in his words
and actions. His constant good humor and generous heart will be sorely missed by his
family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 10, 11 a.m. at the Neil O'Donnell and Sons
Mortuary, 372 East 100 So. where friends may call Sunday from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of
flowers, the family requests gifts be made to the Utah Chapter of The Nature
Conservancy, 559 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, 84102.
