George C. Mackey | Pharmacy owner, 82

George C. Mackey, 82, of Newtown Square, a former pharmacy owner who had served
as fire marshal of Delaware County, died of complications from pneumonia Thursday at
Riddle Memorial Hospital.

For many years, Mr. Mackey co-owned two Delaware County pharmacies, one in
Morton, the other in Newtown Square. The Mackey Drug Stores were owned and
operated by Mr. Mackey and his brother James Q. The two men started the business in
the 1960s, eventually sold the Morton branch, and then ran the Newtown Square store
until they sold it in the early 1980s.

By then, Mr. Mackey was deputy Delaware County fire marshal. He served in the post
for eight years before taking over as the county's chief fire marshal. He served in the
position for two years.

Mr. Mackey, a 1938 graduate of Lower Merion High School, attended the Philadelphia
College of Pharmacy and Science, now the University of the Sciences. He was an
Army veteran, serving in Hawaii during World War II.

Mr. Mackey was a member of the Newtown Square Fire Company for more than 50
years, serving as fire chief for 16 of those years. He was a charter member of the
Newtown Square Rotary Club.

He had been married to Martha T. Thomson Mackey for 51 years before her death in
1995.

Surviving are daughters Judith Mackey Cook and Susan T. Simpson; his fiancee,
Dolores Belderes; and five grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. tomorrow at Spruce Street Baptist Church,
Route 252 and Gradyville Road, Newtown Square. Services follow at 11 a.m. Burial is
in Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hero Scholarship Fund of Delaware County,
