Bill died Jan. 17, 2002, in Oak Ridge, Tenn., his beloved home since graduation. He 
prepared at Bethlehem [Pa.] HS, following his grandfather (1893) to Princeton.

He majored in chemical engineering, graduating with high honors, Phi Beta Kappa. Bill 
was a member of the band, various campus agencies, and Campus Club. He was 
awarded his doctorate in chemical engineering from Cornell U. in 1944.

While completing his PhD, he was recruited by the US government to work on the 
Manhattan Project. For the next 40 years, Bill was the major contributor to or 
consultant for every "impossible" project at the Oak Ridge U-235 separation unit. 
After he retired in 1984, Bill devoted himself to his family, his garden, and to family 
genealogy.

Bill is survived by his wife, Frances, two sons, John and James, his daughter, Karen 
Skellie, his brother, James '52, two sisters, Betty de Jongh and Jean Metzger, and 
three grandchildren. To them his classmates extend their sincere sympathies.

JOHN WILLIAM STROHECKER, 83, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at 
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge. 
Born Jan. 22, 1919, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of Clair Esterline 
Strohecker and Florence Wilkinson Strohecker. He came to Oak Ridge in 1944 
from Bethlehem, Pa., where he grew up. 
Mr. Strohecker was retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division as an employee 
at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. 
He was a member of First United Methodist Church. His hobbies included 
genealogy and growing wildflowers. 
Mr. Strohecker is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances "Betty" Bond 
Strohecker; two sons, John Bradley Strohecker and his wife, Karen, of 
Woodbridge, Va., and James Stuart Strohecker and his wife, Nancy, of Los 
Angeles, Calif.; his daughter, Karen Skellie and her husband, Bert, of 
Decatur, Ga.; his brother, James Robert Strohecker and his wife, Marilyn, of 
Annapolis, Md.; two sisters, Betty de Jong and her husband, Henry, of 
Bradenton, Fla., and Jean Metzger and her husband, John, of Vero Beach, Fla.; 
three grandchildren, Jason William Strohecker of Washington, D.C., Brian 
William Skellie of Decatur, Ga., and Mark Albert Skellie of Brooklyn, N.Y. 
A memorial service was to be held at 3 this afternoon, Jan. 21, at First 
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Cantrell, the Rev. Steve Martin 
and the Rev. Bill Mooney officiating. 
Burial was to follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. 
The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to First 
United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 4669, Oak Ridge, TN 37831. 
The family was to receive friends at the church from 2 to 3 this afternoon. 
Weatherford Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
