GARDNER STEPHEN VANDEGRIFT, of Boca Grande FL, Little Compton RI; Northport 
Point MI, and formerly of Gladwyne PA, died Sunday, January 27, 2008, in Sarasota 
FL. He was 80. Steve was born September 18, 1927 in Middletown OH, the son of 
Colin and Elinor Vandegrift Gardner. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and, 
after serving in the US Army in Korea, graduated from Yale University 1952. Known for 
his enthusiastic business and civic efforts, his lifelong passion was the Episcopal 
Church. He recently led a campaign to rebuild and expand 100 year old St. Andrew's 
Episcopal Church in Boca Grande. During his career he served as President of St. 
Christopher's Hospital for Children and Chair-man of Episcopal Academy school. He 
also founded Rusty Scupper restaurant in Wayne and served as a director of Western 
Savings Bank. Other leadership positions included Diamond International paper 
company, New York City; Coastal Bank of Georgia and Frederica Academy school, 
Brunswick GA. Surviving family members in-clude wife, Edith Bettle Gardner; 4 sons 
born to former wife Polly Harrison Gardner who preceded him in death - Lee and Candy 
of Indianapolis IN, Steve Jr. and Margot Nacey of Berthoud CO, Timothy and Deborah 
Froeb of Denver CO, David and Dana of St. Simons Island GA; 7 grand-children; 8 
stepchildren and 16 step grandchildren. Memorial Services will be held at 11 A.M,, 
Saturday, February 9, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Boca Grande FL. Interment will 
be this June at Atwill Memorial Columbarium, Northport Point MI. In lieu of flowers, 
contri-butions may be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, PO Box 272, Boca 
Grande FL 33921-0272, Atwill Memorial Chapel, 105 N. Northcott Dr. Northport MI. 
49670, or any charity chosen by the donor.
