MARBLE FALLS — Juanita Maude “Sis” Tucker Wilkes White, 82, of San
Angelo, formerly of Austin, was called home to be with the Lord on
Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday,
Feb. 18, in Smithwick Cemetery. Juanita was born in Austin on Sep. 1,
1922, to William Henry Tucker and Ursula Maude Gotcher Tucker. The
family moved to Smithwick when she was nine. She attended elementary
school in Austin and Smithwick, and high school in Marble Falls. She
married Alton Ray “Shorty” Wilkes on Nov. 6, 1942, in McAlester,
Okla. They celebrated 25 years together before his death on Dec. 5,
1967. Juanita was a homemaker for many years before getting a beauty
license. She co-owned and operated the Powder Puff Beauty Shoppe in
Bloomington, Texas, from 1959-1967. After Shorty’s death, Juanita
married John White on Sept. 2, 1969. They were married 30 years,
until his death Oct. 11, 1999. Juanita retired in 1988 after an
exemplary 20-year career with the IRS. She enjoyed quilting, reading
and working difficult crossword puzzles. She couldn’t be beaten in
any word game. In 1999, her failing health forced her to move to San
Angelo to be closer to family. Juanita was living at Baptist
Memorials Center Division 2 at the time of her death. The family
would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at BMC for
taking care of Mother. Juanita was preceded in death by her parents,
William Henry Tucker and Ursula Maude Gotcher Tucker; brother, James
Thomas Tucker; and infant brother, Baby Tucker. Survivors include
three children, son William Henry Wilkes and wife Vacia, daughter
Donna Ann Gregg and husband Bruce, and son Alton Ray Wilkes Jr. and
wife Mary; two brothers, William H. Tucker and Robert V. Tucker; one
sister, Elisabeth Anne Biles; nine grandchildren, Kim Smith, Jeff
Wilkes, Lyn Ramsay, David Gregg, Larry Gregg, Monica Smith, Tony
Gottfried, Rakkelle Carter and James Wilkes; 11 great-grandchildren;
and a host of extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes
Association or your favorite charity.
