Harry Virgil Lewis passed away peacefully at 6:00 a.m., July 8, 2009 at the MonteVista
at Coronado. An only child, Harry was predeceased by his parents, Arthur O. Lewis
and Estelle Crouchet. He was born June 16, 1914 in El Paso and celebrated his 95th
birthday this year with friends at the MonteVista. Harry was a member of the first
graduating class of Austin High School. He graduated from the University of Texas at
Austin with a B.A. degree in 1935, then he earned a Masters degree from
Northwestern University in 1938. He served as a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve until
1946. Harry lived in Venezuela as an Exxon employee until he retired in his mid-50's.
In retirement, he traveled incessantly, sharing his European and other travels with his
mother. He was a devoted son and cared for his mother until her death. Thereafter he
traveled extensively across the United States with a group of adults in a caravan of
motor homes, arranging in advance attendance of symphony and opera performances,
musicals and Big Band concerts to enjoy together. Harry was a gourmet cook and
hosted his friends often. He was exceedingly generous and kind and he made friends
easily. Harry's friends recall his impeccable appearance, his beautiful singing voice,
his passion for music and his quick wit. He was a truly dapper, gentle person. Harry is
survived by close family friends Patty and Walt Schwartz of Crestline, California,
lifetime El Paso friend Margaret Winter, and loyal friend and advocate Murdell Holbert.
Special thanks go to MonteVista nurses Mareb and Terry, as well as to Hospice of El
Paso, who made his last weeks the best possible. Private burial arrangements are
directed by Martin Funeral Home. A celebration of Harry's life will be held at the
Montevista on July 24. Services entrusted to Martin Funeral Home West, 128 N.
Resler Dr., El Paso, TX 79912.
