George Elliott Yetman, age 90 years, died in his Walpole, Massachusetts home on
Wednesday, August 14, 2013. Born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada on March
27, 1923, he was the son of the late George Nelson and Viola Annie (Elliott) Yetman.
He graduated from Weymouth High School with the class of 1940. George proudly
served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in
the European Theatre of Operations as a Light Tank Crewman. George was
discharged in 1946 as a Staff Sergeant. Upon returning from the Army, he graduated
from the Massachusetts State College at Amherst with the class of 1949. He has been
a resident of Walpole for the past 60 years moving from Colchester, Connecticut
where he lived for for 3 years. George spent his working career as a teacher. He
began his career at the Bacon Academy in Colchester before moving on to the Norfolk
County Agricultural High School in Walpole, where he worked for 25 years and was
the head of the Horticulture Department. In addition he was employed by the Assabet
Valley Regional School in Marlboro from 1975 to 1986. He was remembered for garden
exhibits designed and constructed by his students at the New England Flower Show,
winning many awards over 14 year period. George was presented the highest award
for teachers, recognizing his achievements in leadership in agricultural related subject
through the Future Farmers of America. George loved to travel with his wife Nancy and
as members of the Braintree Yacht Club, they sailed together for over 40 years
throughout New England, Florida, the British Virgin Islands and the Canadian
Maritimes. He was an avid hockey fan, and played at both Weymouth High School and
Massachusetts State College. In addition, he played for the Weymouth Cubs Hockey
Club and the Old Colony Hockey League. Beloved husband of the late Nancy D.
(Davies) Yetman. Loving father of Warren E. Yetman of Walpole, Lesley J. Kayan of
Northfield, and Bruce E. Yetman of Wrentham. Cherished grandfather of 7 and great
grandfather of 7. Brother of the late William Earl Yetman. Dearest friend of Louise
Fitzgerald of Braintree. Uncle of Susan Wallis of Plympton and Richard Yetman of LA.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Georges Life Celebration on Sunday,
August 18, 2013 from 1-3PM in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home 48 Common
Street Walpole. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home on Sunday at 3PM.
Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the
Alzheimers Association 480 Pleasant Street Watertown, MA 02472.
