Deceased Name: C. FRED RICE

Carlton Frederick Rice, 63, of the 400 block of Court St., died Nov. 23, 1996, in a 
Portsmouth hospital. 
Mr. Rice, a native of Caswell County, N.C., graduated from Elon College and earned a 
master's degree in education from the College of William and Mary. He retired in 1993 
as assistant superintendent of the U.S. Department of Defense Overseas Schools, 
Oxford, England. After his retirement he returned to Portsmouth and became a co-
owner and operator of Prison Square Antiques. He was a member of Monumental 
United Methodist Church and the Portsmouth Rotary Club. 
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Hudgins Rice; two daughters, Elly R. Ostrow of 
Charlotte, N.C., Nancy R. Bell of Atlanta, Ga.; four sisters, Edna R. McAdams and 
Thelma R. Farrington, both of Burlington, N.C., Lena R. Mahaley of Caswell County, 
Nellie R. Mahaley of Providence, N.C.; four brothers, F. Thomas Rice, Leo H. Rice, 
Charlie A. Rice, all of Burlington, G. Julius Rice of Sonoma, Calif.; and three 
grandchildren, Rachel, Alex and Danny Ostrow. 
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Monumental United Methodist 
Church by the Rev. R. Beverly Watkins. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. 
Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. 
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Monumental United Methodist 
Church or to a charity of choice.
