Deceased Name: H. Eugene Smee

Gene Smee, 80, of San Luis Obispo, was called home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus 
Christ, Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at his home. 
A memorial service of celebration will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Los Osos 
Valley Memorial Chapel, conducted by Rev. Gordon Gibson. 
Gene was born Feb. 19, 1924, in Pasadena, the middle of three sons to John and 
Louisa Smee. He moved to San Luis Obispo in 1928, where his father began Smee's 
Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning. 
Gene served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. While stationed 
at Minter Field in Bakersfield, he met and later married Bette Jean Anderson on April 
15, 1944. After the war ended, Gene and Bette settled in San Luis Obispo, where 
Gene joined the Smee family business. 
Gene was an active member in the San Luis Obispo Church of the Nazarene for many 
years, where he served in various capacities. He donated numerous hours, building 
and maintaining the church facilities as well as being a board member, Sunday school 
teacher, superintendent and Young People's president. He loved Jesus. 
Gene had a love for flying and enjoyed piloting small aircraft as well as radio-
controlled airplanes. He was often nicknamed "Mr. Fix-it" among family and friends. 
His years of devout faith in Jesus and life of commitment have left a lasting legacy of 
faithfulness to his family and friends. 
Gene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bette Smee; daughter, Helen Reed and 
husband Jim; grandsons, Darren Reed and wife Julie of Hawaii and Brad Reed and 
wife Bethany of Phoenix; son, Gary Smee and wife Mary of San Luis Obispo; 
grandsons, Garrett Smee and wife Randi of Atascadero and Mitchell Smee and wife 
Heidi of Gig Harbor, Wash.; and four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Kyla, Jackson and 
Lillian. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Louisa Smee.
