Phippen, Susanne (LaCroix) A longtime resident of Wenham, beloved wife, mother and
force of nature, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday,
April 28, 2015. She was 88 years old. Born in Boston in 1927 to Morris F. and Esther
H. (Paine) LaCroix, she was raised at Spooner Road, Chestnut Hill and at Beach Bluff
Avenue in Swampscott. "Snooky" Phippen attended Windsor School in Boston and
graduated from Smith College in 1949 and married Richard Dane Phippen in 1951.
They moved to Wenham and built their home at Hurdle Hill Farm where they lived for
over 60 years, and raised seven children. She cared deeply about the environmental,
educational and cultural resources in the area. Throughout her life, she supported a
number of non-profit organizations, but most of all she liked to participate, to organize
and to get things done. She was active in the Wenham Village Improvement Society.
She was a founding member of Wenham's Conservation Commission and served as
chairman during the 1970's, after passage of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection
Act. She served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Trustees of
Reservations, as a Trustee at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York and was a
founding member and President of the Board of Trustees for Pingree School. She was
a long-time Trustee at both the Wenham Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum,
where she was also an enthusiastic docent. Her energy and commitment in these
capacities were an inspiration to all who knew her. She had a strong affinity for
natural places, and especially the northern woods, rivers and lakes of Maine and
Quebec, the salt marshes of the North Shore and, of course, her beloved Hurdle Hill
Farm. Family was most important her, and she strove successfully to maintain strong
ties amongst her close and distant relations, throughout her life. Her brother, William
LaCroix, and two sisters, Ruth LaC. Darling and Jeanne LaC. Crocker, predeceased
her. She is survived by her husband; her sister, Edith LaC. Dabney of Chestnut Hill;
and her brother-in-law, Nelson, J. Darling of Swampscott. She is also survived by her
seven children, William of Wenham, Peter of Essex, Morey of Northampton, David of
Beverly, Anne of Wenham, Henry of Beverly and Joanna of Boston; and in addition, 17
grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and innumerable nieces, nephews, grandnieces
and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, 149 Asbury Street,
Hamilton, on Thusday, May 14, at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by the Campbell Funeral
Home, 525 Cabot Street, BEVERLY. Memorial contributions to the Wenham Museum
would be appreciated (Wenham Museum, 132 Main Street, Wenham, MA 01984). A
memorial service will be held at Christ Church in Hamilton on May 14 at 11 a.m.
