HUNSTABLE, , JOHN AUGUSTUS Born 3/18/1924 John graduated from Mesquite
High School class of 1942. John entered the Navy serving on the aircraft carder USS
Chenango as a meteorologist. John attended Baylor University attaining a degree in
education and then became an ordained Baptist minister helping to open several
Churches in central Texas. He met Elizabeth "Betty" Adell Phelps at a Baptist youth
rally and they married on February 11, 1950. John taught History and coached football
at Cedar Hill School until moving to Mesquite in 1960 where he then taught Jul grade
Texas History at Wilkinson, Vanston and McDonald Middle Schools until retiring in
1984. He spent his remaining active years working at Tom Thumb grocery store and
taking care of his ailing wife until her death in 1997. John then began taking his
brother-in law to dialysis every other day until he could no longer drive. His last four
years were joyous, despite health problems, as. he was in Los Angeles with his sons
and their families. John brought many smiles to the faces of his grand children. He was
an early member of the Mesquite Genealogical Society. One project he was most
proud of, which spanned several decades, involved having each of his students make
a family tree. He would then set about connecting his lineage to those of his students.
John attributed his longevity to being able to accept things as they came and plating
them "In the hands of The Lord" as he would say. He will be greatly missed by all
those whose lives he touched. John is survived by his two sons John R. (Michele)
Hunstable and Mark (Giselle) Hunstable, his siblings Blanch, Emily, Fred and Charles,
several nieces and nephews and his two Grandchildren Veronica and Nathaniel.
