Ernest H. Land
Washington Lawyer
Ernest Henry Land, 77, a retired Washington lawyer who worked for the U.S. Patent
and Trademark Office from 1980 to 1987 as a trademark examiner, died May 10 at his
home in Washington. He had heart disease.
Mr. Land spent his legal career at the firm of Denning & Wohlstetter and specialized in
federal administrative law. His cases involved the Interstate Commerce Commission,
the Defense Department, trademarks, copyrights and unfair trade practices.
He joined the firm in 1953, became a partner in 1959 and held of counsel status from
1977 to 1980.
He was a 1950 history and economics graduate of Illinois College in his native
Jacksonville, Ill., and a 1953 graduate of George Washington University law school.
After retiring, he did volunteer work at Iona House senior services center in
Washington and the Whitman-Walker Clinic.
He told his high school alumni committee that his other retirement activities included
"loafing" and "doing the things I skipped during my workaholic days," such as
attending museums, concerts and plays and traveling to beaches and the mountains.
He was a vestryman at the old St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Washington and a
former vestryman and warden at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church in Washington.
Survivors include a brother and three sisters.
