W. Eugene (Gene) Penman 1930 ~ 2007 BOUNTIFUL- Gene Penman, age 77, passed
away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 29, 2007 following a long and
courageous battle with emphysema. Gene was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on January
12, 1930 to Wallace A. and Alice (DeLand) Penman. He graduated from West High
School in 1947. Nicknamed "Penny" he was very active in student government and
never forgot the years or the friends he made playing varsity football there. He was
married to Betty Renee Margetts on June 12, 1953 in Salt Lake City where they lived
and started their family before moving to Bountiful, Utah in 1959. He was a member of
the LDS Church. After high school Gene went to work as a truck driver delivering
roofing materials to construction sites throughout the western U.S. These years gave
him many stories and a knowledge of the "pre-interstate" highway system that he
shared with us throughout his life. In 1956 it was time to settle down. Gene, along with
his brother Dick, started and successfully ran Penman Brothers Mobil Service, a family
business that thrived for over 40 years. It was a place where other family members first
learned what hard work and responsibility was all about. It was also a place where
generations of loyal customers became personal friends. Gene will be remembered by
his family as a hard worker, good provider and perhaps most of all as a perfectionist.
Whether it was how the lawn should be mowed or how the Christmas lights should be
hung, there was no detail too small and there were no shortcuts. Anyone who worked
for or around Gene learned that "Any job worth doing was worth doing right." He loved
sports and the outdoors and spent what free time he had hunting and fishing. Family
outings to a lake or stream were common. When his kids were grown and gone, he
started in on the grandkids teaching them how to bait a hook or clean a fish. As a
husband, father and grand-father, Gene was a selfless person who cared most about
those around him. Even as his own health declined, his concerns were consistently for
others. He was a unique and special person who will be deeply missed even though
we are comforted that he is now in a better place. Gene was preceded in death by his
son, Don Scot Penman in 1997. He is survived by his loving wife, Renee of Bountiful;
son, Steven (Susan) Penman of Germantown, TN; daughter, Sandy (Rick) Wood of
North Salt Lake; and his two brothers, Richard (Sue) Penman of Bountiful and Donald
Penman of Salt Lake. He will also be missed and remembered by his six grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Community Nursing and
especially Jocelyn and Shellie for the kindness, compassion and special care they
provided. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the
chapel of the Bountiful 20th Ward, 102 East 1400 South. A viewing will be held prior
to the service from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
Condolences may be sent to the family care of Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North
Main, Bountiful, Utah 84010. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com
