My mom, Ruth Andersson May of Dallas passed away June 1, 2014 at the age of 95 in 
Dallas, Texas.

Born March 13, 1919 in Dallas, to Alfred O and Ruth Andersson, founder and publisher 
of the Dallas Dispatch, which was a Scripps paper, newspapers ran deep in her blood. 
She was an alumna of Hockaday and Pomona College, where she was president of the 
ski club.

During WWII, she worked in the Weather Bureau, where she met my father, an Army 
Air Corps pilot. In the course of her career at Falcon Airways, she owned about a 
dozen planes, including Twin Beeches, DC3s and Carvairs.


Ruth, known as “Bumps” to her friends, led a long and fruitful life. An ecologist before 
the word existed, she worked to restore prairies to the Texas landscape, and her 
watercolors of Texas wildflowers are of note. Many years ago, she adopted twenty 
acres of Harry B Moss Park, restoring it to its original native grassland state

She is survived by three sons and a daughter and numerous grandchildren.

She was an active member until her passing of the Native Prairie Association of 
Texas, the Dallas Garden Club, the Dallas Country Club, the Botanical Research 
Institute of Texas, and the Colonial Dames. She was instrumental at the Claremont 
Colleges in founding and maintaining the press which publishes literary works. She 
graced the Cove at La Jolla with her presence at every opportunity, expressing her 
love of the unique community and the Pacific Ocean.
