Harold E. (Happy) Thompson
GIRARD - Harold E. (Happy) Thompson, 81, of Girard, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at
St. Vincent Health Center in Erie. Born in Richmond Township, Ashtabula County,
Ohio, July 17, 1919, he was a son of Charles N. and Vera Alice Winch Thompson. He
married Lovina M. Heath. His experience selling farming supplies as a young lad paid
off in later years; for eight years, he and his wife owned and operated the Kinsman
Hardware Store and later worked at the John Deere dealership in Kinsman, Ohio.
Known for his woodworking, he made "working" models of old historical items such as
spinning wheels, piano stools, stage coaches and covered wagons. For the past 14
years, he was a minister at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Claridon, Ohio,
and Pilgrim Holiness Church in Linesville. A musician at heart, he tuned pianos and
played his favorite musical instruments, the piano and violin, regularly during church
services. Recently, while living in Girard, he attended the Free Methodist Church. In
addition to his wife of 62 years, survivors include a son, Larry E. Thompson and his
wife, Jerri, of Erie; two daughters, Beth Powers of Girard, and Ellie Frank and her
husband, Denny, of Austin Town, Ohio; seven grandchildren; three great-
grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Sakuta and her husband, Mike, of Lake City, and
Vivian Buell of Jefferson, Ohio; three brothers, Kenneth Thompson and his wife,
Laura, of Richmond, Va., Duane Thompson and his wife, Norma, of Linesville, and the
Rev. Garth Thompson of Miami, Fla. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy
Thompson and Joyce Heath; one brother, Stanley Thompson; and a grandson, Mark
Powers. Calling hours will be Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Jean Evans
Thompson Funeral Home, 11883 Main St., East Springfield. The funeral will be
Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Federated Church in East Springfield with Pastor Ed Huntley
of the Federated Church and Pastor Byron Oakes of the Girard Free Methodist Church
officiating. Burial will be in the Richmond Center Cemetery in Richmond, Ohio. In lieu
of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Peniel Holiness Camp, in care
of Mrs. Carol Durfee, 10070 Reese Drive, Girard, Pa. 16417.
