Joann Marie "Ann" Repp Polka, 81, of Cary, North Carolina, lost her battle with lung 
cancer and died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at her home.

She was born Jan. 20, 1933, in Tiffin, to the late Gertrude Johnson Repp and Harvey 
Repp. She married Eugene "Gene" F. Polka in 1963, and he preceded her in death in 
2012.

Ann is survived by her brother, James (Jim) Repp of Tiffin; daughter, Elizabeth (Greg) 
Garvin and their daughters, Claire and Catherine, all of Denver, Colorado; and son, 
James (Esther) Polka and their sons, Noah and Jacob, all of Cary, North Carolina.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Eugene "Gene" 
Repp and Donald "Don" Repp.

Ann was born and raised in Tiffin, where she graduated from Hopewell-Loudon High 
School and then attended Bowling Green State University. Following school, she 
worked as a stewardess for American Airlines, stationed in Dallas, Texas, and then 
Los Angeles, California, until she met and married her husband. Following the adoption 
of their two children, Ann and Gene moved around the country for his work, spending 
time in Wisconsin, Connecticut, Missouri, Tennessee and New Jersey.

She took on a variety of jobs and hobbies as they moved, including catering, retail 
sales, Girl Scout leader and travel agent. They retired to Kansas City in 2001. Ann 
worked as a nanny while in Kansas City which allowed her to spend time with two 
young children who she cared about and enjoyed immensely.

Ann loved traveling, visiting with friends, participating in the Kiwi Club (an 
organization of former flight attendants of American Airlines), checking up on her 
extended network of beloved nieces and nephews and assorted family members and 
friends through Facebook, and pretending to be concerned whenever the University of 
Kansas lost a basketball game. She loved, and humored, her husband by eating his 
never-ending supply of sourdough pancakes and tomatoes and caring for the string of 
dogs and cats that came to live in their home.

A graveside service will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at Fairmont 
Cemetery, Tiffin.

Visitation for family and friends will be noon-1 p.m. Saturday at Engle-Shook Funeral 
Home & Crematory, 135 N. Washington St., Tiffin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a local hospice care provider or battered 
women's shelter.
