VanDERWERKER, Nancy Cuyler Bangs

Nancy Cuyler Bangs VanDerwerker, 70, resident of Devon Park Drive, widow of Dr. 
Earl E. VanDerwerker Jr., formerly of Norfolk, died (April 3, 1998) at Self Memorial 
Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, NJ and raised in Hohokus, she had made her home in 
Greenwood, SC, since 1994. She was a graduate of Ridgewood High School and 
attended Columbia Hospital School of Nursing in New York. Most of her adult life was 
lived in Connecticut, where she was active in Garden Clubs, the Medical Auxiliary, 
and many other civic organizations. She was a member of Main Street United 
Methodist Church and the Lawton Sunday School Class. A member and past president 
of the Greenwood Federation of Garden Clubs, Nan was recently honored by the 
Federation with the ''Woman of the Year Award''. She was a member of the Lotus 
Garden Club, the Holly Garden Club, and the Antheneum Study Club. She was a 
member and past president of the Greenwood Woman's Club and was past chairman of 
the Cokesbury College Historical Commission. She continued to serve as a trustee of 
Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, MA. Surviving are three sons: Dr. Greg 
VanDerwerker of Greenwood, SC Gerritt VanDerwerker of Waldoboro, ME, and Dirk 
VanDerwerker of Kinderhook, NY. A sister, Sally Lockhart of Clayton, GA; four 
grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday, at Main Street 
United Methodist Church, with Dr C.J. Lupo Jr. and Dr Gareth Scott officiating. Burial 
will be private. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. Blyth Funeral 
Home, Greenwood, SC in charge of arrangements.
