SCHUYLERVILLE - Leon R. Mathis, 85, a resident of Pearl Street, passed away 
Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at the Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y. 

 Born March 11, 1923, in Schuylerville, he was the son of Leon R. Mathis Sr. and 
Leona Ramsden Mathis and had been a lifelong resident. 

 Leon was a 1941, graduate of Schuylerville Central School. 

 In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and was honorably discharged 
with the rank of corporal in 1945. During his years of service to his country he served 
aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown as an aircraft carrier gunner and later participated in the 
Battle of Iwo Jima. 

 He was a heavy equipment teacher for Saratoga/Warren BOCES for many years and 
after retirement was employed by the Saratoga National Park Service in Schuylerville. 

 He was a former member of the Schuyler Hose Company in Schuylerville and had 
served as Fire Chief for several years. His enjoyments included wood working and 
making furniture. In the 1930's he was a well known Class A boat racer, and in the 
late 1940's and early 1950's was a stock car racer. 

 Survivors are his wife, Alberta DeLoriea Mathis of Schuylerville; his children, son, 
David Mathis and his wife, Debra, of Schuylerville; and daughters, Cynthia DeLappa 
and husband, Darwin, of Lake George and Nancy Rodriquez of Ponte Vedra Beach, 
Fla.; a sister, Thelma Corsetti of Fort Edward; grandchildren: Nicholas and Erika 
Hanson of Porte Vedra Beach, Fla., Sarah Mathis of London, England, Glen Mathis of 
Seattle, Wash., and Jonathan DeLappa of Lake George as well as one niece, 
Christine Mozal of Glen Lake. 

 Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Flynn Bros., Inc. 
Funeral Home, 13 Gates Ave., Schuylerville. A service will be conducted at 4 p.m. 
with the Rev. Bonnie Bates, pastor of the Schuylerville United Methodist Church, 
officiating. 

 Interment with military honors will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at the Gerald 
B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. 

 The family suggests memorials in his name be made to the General Schuyler 
Emergency Squad, P.O. Box 111, Schuylerville, NY 12871.
