Frances passed away on October 20, 2014 in Santaquin, Utah due to complications of
pneumonia at the age of 100. Mom was born in Waupun, Wisconsin on February 17,
1914 to Gerrard Gustof Adolf (George) Vogelzang and Jacoba Petronella (Jane)
Spaans. Her father was born in the Dutch East Indies and her mother in Holland. Mom
grew up in Waupun, Wisconsin, Corsica, South Dakota and Santa Ana, California. She
graduated from Santa Ana High School where she excelled in math and tennis. Mom
graduated from Chapman College as a Registered Nurse.
Mom moved to the Wilshire area of Los Angeles, California where she worked for the
podiatrist, Dr Scholl’s. She loved going to dances and playing tennis. She was
baptized into the LDS church while living in the Wilshire area. While in Los Angeles
she met and married her dancing and tennis partner Gilbert Carroll Bailey on December
28, 1938 in Santa Ana, California. They were sealed in the Manti Temple in 1939.
They eventually moved to Monterey Park, California and had two children, son Carroll
(Cary) G. and daughter Sandra (Sandi). Mom had a tender heart for children and took
into our home, cared for and loved as her own Richard Sorenson, Kathy Smith, Bonnie
Cass, and Carlene McBurney. Additionally, she demonstrated her passion for
volunteering in the community (PTA, church, the Red Cross). Her husband Carroll
passed away suddenly from a cerebral hemorrhage in October of 1956. Mom had no
option but to return to work as a nurse at the Santa Fe Hospital in Los Angeles. For
ten years she battled and overcame serious health issues. In 1969 she married Daniel
Maule, a neighbor, in Santa Barbara, California. They resided in Monterey Park and
Palm Desert, California. Dan passed away in 1986. Mom continued to volunteer at
Alhambra Community, San Gabriel, and the Garfield Hospitals until the age of 90.
Additionally she had the opportunity of travelling throughout Europe several Times.
Eventually she moved in with her daughter Sandi and her husband Al Guerrero in
Monterey Park, California. In 2007 Frances went to Payson, Utah to live with her son
Cary and daughter-in-law Louana. Her granddaughter Brooke Bailey Cowden spent
countless hours helping care for her in Payson. In 2013 mom moved into Latter-Days
Assisted Living home in Santaquin, Utah. In February 2014 many of her family and
friends came to celebrate her 100th birthday.
Frances loved working in the Primary and Relief Society organizations. She loved to
knit, and knitted many beautiful dresses and sweaters.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her brother Cornelius and
sister-in-law Pauline Steinhour Vogelzang, her sister Nellie, son-in-law Paul Staum,
and her son-in-law Alvin Guerrero. Frances is survived by her son Cary and his wife
Louana Bailey, daughter Sandi Guerrero, 10 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren,
and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Many thanks to the staff at Latter-Days Assisted Living in Santaquin for their loving
care. A Memorial Service will be held at the Payson Utah West Stake Center, 780
West 500 South, on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., interment will be at the
Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, California. Mom will be laid to rest next to her husband
Gilbert Carroll Bailey.
