RICHARD CARLETON SMITH, M.D. Died January 22, 2006 in Canon City, Colorado at 
the age of 81. Born in Concord, MA. The fourth of six sons to Allison and Marguerite 
Smith. Richard grew up on the family farm in Stow, MA. He graduated from Hale High 
School, attended Bates College (Lewiston, Maine), and graduated in 1946 from Boston 
University Medical School. Richard was a Board Certified Pediatrician whose career 
took him from Boston, MA to Chicago, IL to Cairo, Egypt (U.S. Navy) before he settled 
in San Lorenzo, CA for 24 years. After a decade in Saudi Arabia (ARAMCO Medical 
staff in Dhahran), he returned to the United States and continued to work as long as 
he could. In his later years he tutored children in reading in the Head-Start program. 
An enthusiastic Christian, he taught Bible classes, served in leadership positions at 
Melrose Baptist Church, Oakland, CA, and encouraged many with his sense of humor 
and "super-duper" attitude. He had a heart for missions and sharing the Gospel, as 
well as a passion for photography and the outdoors. Dr. Smith was currently serving as 
Chairman of the Board of Jess C. Spencer Mortuaries, Inc. Richard is survived by his 
wife of 17 years Gayle Swart Smith of Canon City, Colorado; daughters Diane Hogrefe 
(Richard) of Santa Rosa; Constance Robinson (Michael) of San Lorenzo; Beverly 
Taetzsch (Bill) of Magalia and her two children, William Richard and Camilla Grace; 
son Richard C. Jr., of Anchorage, Alaska. Also stepdaughter Dawn Hogan (Joe) of 
Providence, Rhode Island and her three sons, Jack, Luke and Patrick; stepson 
Brandon Borschel (Sierra) of Anchorage, Alaska; and brother Paul Smith (Doris) of 
New Holland, Pennsylvania, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded 
in death by his first wife of 39 years, Camilla Lynch Smith, and brothers Robert, 
Everett, Philip and Donald. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2006 
at 2:00 PM at Jess C. Spencer Mortuary, 21228 Redwood Rd., Castro Valley. A
