Helen Mary (Pilkington) Tarbell died peacefully July 20, 2008 at her home in Naples,
FL. Born and raised in Providence, RI, Helen married Bob Tarbell and they moved to
Hudson, MA, where they lived for 17 years, prior to moving to Vestal, NY. She and
Bob moved from Vestal to Naples in 1997. Helen is survived by her loving husband,
Bob; their six daughters, Joy Tarbell and husband, Eddie Minyard of North Conway,
NH, Jerine Tarbell of Knightdale, NC, Eileen Steigele of Gainesville, GA, Dr. Nancy
Tarbell and husband, Dr. Jay Loeffler of Waban, MA, Linda and husband, Raymond
Woodford of Syracuse, NY, Dr. Barbara Tarbell and husband, Dr. Larry Katz of
Ringoes, NJ; ten grandchildren; one greatgrandson; and many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by one sister, Ann McBride and brother-in-law, Francis of
Barrington, RI; and one sister-inlaw, Margaret Pilkington Riley of Kingston, RI. She
was predeceased by sisters, Florence Horvat and Jane Slater; and brothers, Thomas,
John and Edward Pilkington, all of Rhode Island. While living in Vestal, NY, she was
employed by Binghamton University and pursued undergraduate studies at Harpur
College and graduate studies at the School of Advanced Technology. There, she was
known for her seminar, "Women's Awareness," which she conducted for civil service
employees as well as an evening class for the community. She also developed a
course for men, "Hazards of Being Male," for civil service employees. Later, she
joined Coldwell Banker George T. Decker Real Estate as a broker-associate and was
their top producer during her years there. Helen was active in her church, St. John the
Evangelist, as a teacher and substitute teacher in the religious education program and
a volunteer for funeral lunches. She was a founding member of the Club at Sterling
Oaks and on the Board of Governors there. A funeral Mass will be held at St. John the
Evangelist Church on Thursday, July 24th at 11:00 a.m. followed by a burial at the
adjacent St. John cemetery. A bereavement luncheon will be held at St. John's, after
the burial. Please wear something blue in Helen's honor. In lieu of flowers,
contributions may be made to Parkinson Association of Southwest Florida, P.O. Box
